This morning I met Jed and Rachel who are walking with me the next two days. Jed is first up walking Ohakune to Waiouru. We started off in wet weather gear as it had been raining. We strolled through the township of Ohakune. A lovely place and then we came across the giant carrot so had to take a photo.

We then strode out along the highway. It was drizzly and many times the verge was small. Many trucks whizzed by us but most gave us a wide berth. Due to wanting to see cars coming towards you, we walk into the traffic but on two occasions today a car overtook behind us and came whizzing passed without any warning. We had two heart attacks, each time this happened.

We got a toot, a thumbs up, a ride offer and loads of waves from truckies. We passed the Tangiwai Disaster Memorial, pulp mill and saw mill. Otherwise it was all farmland.

Jed had long legs but didn’t mind going my pace. He was great company and I was happy when he said he had sore feet like me too. A big shout out to Jed for his fundraising efforts. He is at $705.03 today which is a fantastic effort!

In the last couple of k’s it rained proper and wet us down. All trucks that went passed after this then gave us a good spray. We walked under huge power lines, humming and then we saw ahead, Waiouru. We managed to check off the 27km in five hours so we were done by lunchtime. That means some bonus rest time this afternoon..yay!
