Mangaweka to Hunterville
Start Point: Mangaweka
Finish Point: Hunterville
Distance: 28km Time: 7 hours
Unfortunately my day started with a 2km walk up the hill from my accommodation back to the plane on Mangaweka’s main drag. I’ll call it my warm up! There I met Liz, Daryl and Rob who were joining me for the day. They had come across from Marton and are part of the tramping club over there.
We headed off knowing the Flat Hills cafe was 8km away so we had our first target to aim for. It seemed to go quickly and we were soon sitting down enjoying coffees and for me an ice cream.
Off again and next target was Ohingaiti which was only another 3km away. This is where Liz started getting a sore back which only got worse due the uneven side of the road we were walking on. She lasted to half way and we could tell, it was only going to get worse so she called her husband to come and get her.
So down to three, we soldiered on. We had a lunch stop on the side of the road. Then it started drizzling but nothing serious. We had great considerate drivers move over for us, toot and wave.
We came to a sign saying 5km to Hunterville. Great not long to go but oh how the last 5km hurts each day! We quietly walked on trying to walk normally with our sore feet. The hunterway dog statue was a welcome sight and we were relieved to make it.
