I’m Not Alone is a personal odyssey about Kylie Lang walking the length of New Zealand. What started as a small idea turned into an epic adventure encapsulating the theme “I’m Not Alone” due to her husband Graeme stating it was not safe to do this adventure on her own.
Kylie formed a plan to get different people to walk a day with her and after six months of organising, training and recruiting other walkers, Kylie set off in October 2014 to walk the Te Araroa Trail from Cape Reinga to Bluff. Each day she was joined by someone else to keep her company, share the beauty around them and raise funds for the Mental Health Foundation.
Walking over 3000 km, taking 156 days provided many challenges that included walking through a lightning storm, heavy rain, injuries and endless mud. While pushing physical limits the walk also provided great rewards of friendships, generosity from strangers and learning how to deal with loss and adversity.
A lot of the people that walked with Kylie endure mental health issues, or are touched by someone close suffering. Their reasons for joining the walk are embedded in this book. In Kylie’s family she has had two suicides (her father and brother) and this book shares her experience and how this walk and talking to others has helped her deal with those losses.
This book offers an insight into New Zealand and the places Kylie walked through. It provides information for those who wish to walk the Te Araroa Trail, explaining what the trail is like and an understanding of what day-to-day life is like when through-hiking. It gives information for those who wish to do their own adventure and fundraise for a cause.
